Best Projection Mapping Festivals in the World — 2026 Guide
The article is written by a human. Mistakes have been edited by AI.
Dates and figures taken from festival organisers and press releases, checked July 2026. Confirm dates on the official site before booking anything.
The previous version of this list mixed two completely different things: festivals you attend as a spectator, and festivals you enter as an artist. If you are a VJ looking for your first international credit, that distinction is the only one that matters — and almost every published list gets it wrong.
Who this article is for: VJs and mapping artists looking for open calls to enter, and producers deciding which festival is worth travelling to. Not a tourist guide to pretty lights.
What it solves: most festival lists are copied from each other, carry dead events, and never say which ones accept submissions or pay anything.
What you get by the end: the festivals that run genuine open competitions, the largest events worth seeing, what an open call actually asks of you, and what you get paid.
Hello dear VJs and clients of LIME ART GROUP. I am new media artist Alexander Kuiava. Our team has taken part in this circuit, including LPM in Rome, so the practical notes below come from standing in these venues rather than from press releases.
Festivals where you can compete
These run open calls. You submit a concept or a finished piece, a jury selects, and your work gets projected on a real building in front of a real audience. This is how mapping careers actually start.
Video Mapping Festival — Lille and Hauts-de-France, France
The most useful festival on this list for a working artist, because it is built around the competition rather than treating it as a side event.
The 9th edition opens in Lille on 10 and 11 April 2026, with around twenty creations shown on a nocturnal tour through the city centre and Vieux-Lille. The festival then tours roughly fifteen towns across the Hauts-de-France region from April through to October, which means selected work gets shown repeatedly rather than once.
The competition projects onto the facade of the Voix du Nord building in Lille, and the Video Mapping Awards are judged in front of both a professional jury and the public on the opening evening. Winners receive financial prizes and — more valuable — the chance to create at partner festivals, which is how you turn one selection into a touring year.
Why apply: it is a mapping festival first and a light festival second. The audience knows what it is looking at.
Genius Loci Weimar — Germany
One of Europe’s most respected mapping competitions, and the one with the most intellectual weight. Artists submit concepts responding to a stated theme and to specific historic buildings in Weimar, and the selected teams then produce the work.
The 2026 edition carries the theme “Democracy and Society” — which tells you the character of the festival. Genius Loci is not looking for a demo reel of extrusions and glitch effects. It wants work that engages with the building’s history and with an idea.
Why apply: it is the festival that will most improve you as an artist rather than as a technician. Read the theme carefully before you submit; concepts that ignore it do not get selected.
iMapp Bucharest — Romania
The largest projection canvas in competitive mapping. Work is projected onto the facade of the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, a building whose scale is the entire point — it is among the largest administrative buildings in the world, and the mapped surface runs to tens of thousands of square metres.
The competition format has run for multiple editions and typically awards both a jury prize and an audience prize.
Why apply: nothing else gives you a canvas this large, and the scale forces a different kind of design thinking. Content that reads well on a 20-metre facade often collapses at this size.
One Minute Projection Mapping — Japan
A different discipline entirely: you get sixty seconds. The competition, running in Japan since 2012, invites one-minute works projected onto a designated building, and has become one of Asia’s principal mapping contests.
The constraint is the value. A minute forces a single idea, executed cleanly, with no room for a slow build or a filler section. Artists who do well here tend to do well everywhere, because the format removes every place to hide.
Why apply: low production cost relative to other competitions, and the tightest brief in the industry.
Zsolnay Light Festival — Pécs, Hungary
Held 2–5 July 2026, and drawing over 100,000 visitors annually, which makes it the largest light event in Hungary and one of the most visited urban cultural festivals in the region.
It runs a projection mapping competition alongside the wider programme, in the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter — a setting with genuine architectural character rather than a generic municipal facade.
Why apply: a summer date, which is unusual in a circuit dominated by winter events, and a scale large enough to matter without being impossible to get into.
LPM — Live Performers Meeting
Not a competition and not really a festival: a meeting. Founded in 2004, LPM is the long-running international gathering for VJs, live visual performers and creative coders, and it moves between host cities.
The value is not the stage time. It is that everyone in this small industry is in one building for several days. If you want to meet the people who commission mapping work, this is more efficient than any number of applications.
Our own team took part in LPM in Rome, and the honest assessment is that the connections made there outlasted the performances by years.
Why go: for the room, not the slot.

How an open call actually works
Applications follow a pattern, and knowing it saves you from wasting a submission.
What you submit. Usually a concept rather than a finished show — a written treatment, references, sometimes a short animatic. Festivals select ideas and people, then fund the production. Submitting a finished piece made for another building is the most common reason for rejection.
What the festival provides. A photographic or CAD elevation of the target building, technical specifications for the projection setup, the running time, and a deadline. The quality of the building texture you receive varies enormously and directly affects how much work you face.
What you get. Practice ranges from a production fee plus travel and accommodation, through prize money for winners only, to exposure alone. Ask before you commit. A well-funded festival will tell you the fee in the call; one that avoids the question usually has no budget.
Timing. Calls typically open six to nine months before the event and close months before it. If a festival happens in April, its call closed in the previous autumn. Build a calendar and apply a year ahead.
The realistic ratio. These competitions receive hundreds of submissions for a handful of slots. Amsterdam Light Festival has reported over six hundred submissions in a single edition. Assume you will apply to several before one lands, and reuse the research rather than the content.
The biggest festivals to see
You cannot usually compete at these, or the mapping is one element inside a much larger programme. They are worth the trip because they show you what the top of the market looks like.
Fête des Lumières — Lyon, France
The origin of the modern European light festival and still the largest. The 2026 edition runs 5 to 8 December, and the festival draws more than two million people every year.
Lyon matters historically: the tradition dates back to 1852 and the modern festival is why nearly every European city now has a winter light event. It is also the benchmark. If you want to understand what a city-scale light programme looks like when it is properly funded and properly curated, this is the one to see.
Practical note: book accommodation months ahead. Lyon fills.
Noor Riyadh — Saudi Arabia
The largest light art festival in the world, and it is not close.
The scale is documented through Guinness World Records: the “largest light art festival” record was set with 201 items on 15 November 2022, and the festival has set records in four consecutive years for a total of sixteen. Its fourth edition welcomed over 3 million spectators. Since launching in 2021 it reports more than 9.6 million visitors and over 550 artworks by 500 artists.
It is the flagship programme of Riyadh Art, and the budget shows in the commissions. Whatever you think of festivals funded at this level, it is where the largest budgets in light art currently are, and artists from across the world are being commissioned.
Signal Festival — Prague, Czechia
Founded in 2013 and now reporting more than 4.5 million visitors since it began, held over four days in October. Prague’s architecture does much of the work — the historic centre gives artists surfaces most cities cannot offer.
Signal has grown into one of Europe’s strongest light festivals and is regularly discussed as a challenger to Lyon, which is a fair reflection of both its scale and its curation.
Amsterdam Light Festival — Netherlands
A winter festival where the works are viewed along the canals, by boat or on foot, over roughly two months from late November into January. The 2025/26 edition carried the theme “Legacy” — works exploring how we want to be remembered and what we leave behind.
It selects around thirty artworks per edition from a large international open call, and the format is mostly light installation rather than facade mapping. Worth understanding the difference before you apply.
Vivid Sydney — Australia
A multi-week festival combining light, music and ideas, and the largest event of its type in the southern hemisphere. Facade projections onto the Opera House and Customs House are the signature works, and it draws crowds well into the millions across its run.
The practical advice from anyone who has been: go early in the evening and early in the festival’s run, and use public transport.
Toronto Light Festival — Canada
Held in the Distillery District, a pedestrianised heritage area of brick warehouses, which makes it more intimate than the city-scale European events. Free to attend and built around a walking route.
Lumière Durham — United Kingdom
The UK’s largest light festival, biennial, transforming Durham’s medieval centre including the cathedral. The pairing of contemporary projection with Romanesque architecture produces some of the most photographed mapping in Europe.
Where to keep looking
New festivals appear every year and old ones quietly stop. Rather than trusting any static list, including this one:
- Light ZOOM Lumière publishes an annually updated calendar of European light festivals — the most reliable single source in this field.
- Genius Loci, Video Mapping Festival and iMapp all publish their open calls on their own sites and social channels first.
- The Fulldome Database and VJ Union carry calls that never reach general listings.

Practical advice before you apply
Match the festival to your work, not your ambition. iMapp rewards scale, Genius Loci rewards concept, One Minute rewards discipline, Video Mapping Festival rewards craft. Sending the same reel to all four wastes everyone’s time.
Ask what the building texture looks like before you accept. A clean orthographic elevation is a gift. A single crooked photograph taken at dusk means days of extra work rebuilding the geometry yourself.
Budget for the site visit. Content designed from a photograph and content designed after standing in front of the building are different in quality, and juries can tell.
Do not reuse a show. Mapping content is bound to a specific facade. Work made for one building projected onto another reads as wrong even to a general audience, and selection committees spot it immediately.
Keep the rights. Read what the festival claims over your work. Some take broad usage rights to footage of your piece. That footage is your portfolio for the next five years.
Frequently asked questions about Projection Mapping Festivals
Which projection mapping festivals accept submissions from artists?
The Video Mapping Festival in Lille runs the most artist-focused competition, projecting onto the Voix du Nord building with the Video Mapping Awards judged by a professional jury and the public. Genius Loci Weimar selects concepts responding to a stated theme — 2026’s is “Democracy and Society”. iMapp Bucharest offers the largest canvas, on the Palace of the Parliament. One Minute Projection Mapping in Japan runs a sixty-second format. The Zsolnay Light Festival in Pécs runs a competition alongside its main programme.
What is the biggest light festival in the world?
Noor Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest light art festival — 201 items, set on 15 November 2022 — and has set records for four consecutive years, sixteen in total. Its fourth edition drew over 3 million spectators, and since 2021 it reports over 9.6 million visitors and more than 550 artworks by 500 artists. In Europe, Lyon’s Fête des Lumières remains the largest with more than two million visitors a year.
When is the Fête des Lumières in Lyon 2026?
5 to 8 December 2026. It is the origin of the modern European light festival, dating back to 1852, and the model most other city light festivals follow.
Do projection mapping festivals pay artists?
It varies and you must ask. Some pay a production fee plus travel and accommodation, some award prize money to winners only, and some offer exposure alone. Well-funded festivals state the fee in the open call; if a call avoids the subject, assume there is no budget.
How far in advance do I need to apply?
Calls generally open six to nine months before the event and close several months ahead of it. A festival in April will have closed its call the previous autumn. Plan a year ahead and keep a calendar of deadlines rather than reacting to announcements.
What is the difference between a light festival and a projection mapping festival?
A light festival programmes light art broadly — sculptures, installations, lasers, neon — with projection as one element. Amsterdam Light Festival is mostly installation work viewed from the canals. A projection mapping festival is built around facade projection specifically, with the competition as the centrepiece, as at the Video Mapping Festival and Genius Loci Weimar. Apply to the right kind.
Is LPM a projection mapping festival?
No. Live Performers Meeting, running since 2004, is a gathering for VJs, live visual performers and creative coders rather than a mapping competition. Its value is professional: the people who commission this work are in one building for several days.

Content is still king
Every festival on this list judges the same thing: whether your content belongs on that specific building.
That is why generic loops lose competitions. A jury has seen ten thousand extrusions and glitch transitions. What they have not seen is a piece that could only have been made for the facade in front of them.
Since 2012 we have produced over 100 VJ Loops Packs, delivered in both Mov ProRes and Mov DXV, in resolutions from Full HD to 8K, shipped from three separate locations.
For competition work the monochrome video mapping loops are the practical starting point — they function as masks and displacement sources, so the geometry stays yours and the texture comes from us. The video mapping toolkits supply animated arches, columns, windows and cornices with an alpha channel, which is exactly what you need on a heritage facade with real architectural features. Neither replaces your concept. Both save you the weeks of rendering that stop most artists finishing a submission at all.
If we have missed a festival, or one on this list has stopped running, tell us and we will correct it — this list is meant to stay alive.
