We run seven Facebook groups for visual artists, and the largest of them passed 20,000 members — which, as far as we can tell, makes it the biggest community for visual content on Facebook. None of them are broadcast channels. They exist so that VJs can show work, ask questions, find people and get content made.
Who this page is for: VJs, motion designers, projection mapping artists and event technicians who want somewhere to post work, ask a technical question at 2am, or find the exact clip a client just demanded.
What it solves: this industry is scattered. Good answers live in a handful of groups, and most people never find out which group is the right one to ask in.

Hello dear VJs and clients of LIME ART GROUP. I am new media artist Alexander Kuiava. We started these groups because when we began in this industry there was nowhere to ask anything, and we have kept them free and open ever since.

The Facebook groups

Seven groups, each with a different job. Post in the right one and you get answers; post in the wrong one and you get silence.

What you can post

This is the part people get wrong, so it is worth being explicit.

Your own work. Finished shows, work in progress, a loop you are proud of, a clip that took three days to render. Post it. This is not a competition and nobody is judging your render times.

Questions. Technical problems, software behaviour, codec confusion, why your projector refuses a resolution, how somebody achieved a particular look. There is almost always someone in the group who has hit the same wall.

Gigs and gear. Photos from your set, rig questions, equipment for sale, recommendations before a purchase.

Content requests — and this is the one most people do not realise they can do. If you need something specific and it does not exist, ask. A client wants a particular animation, a festival brief calls for a look nobody sells, you need a loop in an unusual resolution. Post the request. Sometimes another member has exactly that file. Sometimes an artist in the group will make it for you. And sometimes we will produce it ourselves — a real portion of what is now in our shop started as somebody’s request in one of these groups.

What does not belong: pirated content, cracked software, and reposting other people’s work as your own. We remove it. Not because we are precious about rules, but because this industry runs on people being able to earn from what they make, and a group that tolerates piracy destroys that for its own members.

Instagram — two accounts, two different things

@limeartgroup is the studio. New packs, showreels, visuals in use at real events, and what the production side looks like day to day. Follow this one if you want to see the content itself.

@alexanderkuiava is my personal account. Behind the scenes, the reasoning behind decisions, experiments that did not work, thoughts on where this industry is going, and the parts of running a content studio that do not make it into a polished post. Follow this one if you want the argument rather than the render.

They deliberately do not duplicate each other. If you are only interested in the visuals, the studio account is enough. If you are building your own practice, the personal one is more useful.

Come in and say hello

Most people join a group, read for six months and never post. That is fine, but it is not where the value is.

The value is in asking the question you think is too basic, and in posting the work you think is not finished enough. In twenty thousand people there is always someone who solved your problem last year and will tell you in one sentence.
